£950.00

A rare collectors piece of antique Aesthetic furniture by renowned furniture/cabinet makers Gillows. Commissioned by Henry Perry East (1845–1905) who played a prominent role in Gillow’s interior design projects. East was  instrumental in embracing the design and interior decoration/orientation of the Aesthetic movement and  credited with coordinating Gillow’s comprehensive decoration of Mandeville Hall, Toorak, Australia (1877–1878). Other recorded commissions included Eberle’s Grand Hotel, Liverpool (1883); as well as the installation of furniture and coordination of the decorative details in the new Cape Town Houses of Parliament, South Africa (1884).

This exceptional quality slipper chair dates from 1877 and is synonymous with Gillows design embracing the new “moden” Aesthetic Movement in Britain that aimed to escape the ugliness and materialism of the Industrial Age, by focusing instead on producing furniture and art that was beautiful and expressive reflecting the change in times.

Furniture of this quality and provenance is a rare find. A real statement piece of furniture. Fabulous form with swept back rest, ebonised turned reeded legs with original gilt decorative inlay. Original Cope and Collinson ceramic castors with decorative brass inlay surround. Swept ebonised rear legs with stamped design/manufacture numbering. Ebonised turned decorative frame with scroll back and gilt inlay. Inject style into any setting with this design classic.

From 1860 to 1900, the Aesthetic Movement initiated sweeping artistic and design changes and its modern concepts of middle-class lifestyle and domestic environment reverberate even into our own time. Today Aestheticism is acknowledged for its revolutionary renegotiation of the relationships between the designer and society, between art and ethics, and between the fine and decorative arts, all of which prepared the way for the art and design movements of the 20th century.
